The Mind Is A Dangerous Place

Things that should boggle the mind but do not

he sits in darkness.
the moonlight falls lightly on the covers and sheets of the mattress he sits on. the mattress cost him less than a hundred dollars.
it serves its job.
he is awake and fumbles for his spectacles.
the pair of glasses are his life but even with them on, he cannot see past the darkness.
he sits still, afraid to move, afraid to spoilt the moment in which his body is warm and comfortable.
he hesitates to let the cold air in, telling his body to wake up from its ridiculous slumber.
he summons up some willpower and moves his right leg a little.
Cold creeps in, jumping as a hunter does to a prey.
he shivers and crawls even smaller.
a sliver of aroma sidles in from outside the bedroom.
it enters his nostrils and he smells the rich savoury taste which await him outside.
outside.
chicken chop.
dinner.
he gathers up all the strength he has and throws off the covers.
he runs to the door before the clammy hands of Cold bears down on.
he flings it open and dashes out of the coffin which is his bedroom, just in time.
the boy has survived this adventure.
the tell-take signs of the danger he was in with Cold are evident in the goosebumps and straight leg hair on his limbs.
he shivers.
his friend, the Cook, stares at him in wonderment.
thought you were asleep, he asks, putting another bit of chicken into his mouth.
the boy replies, rubbing his cold legs with his hands, i was hungry.

im hungry now
